Tennessee special: $84K for a tank of gas

7/17/2012

If you think checking bank statements is for little old ladies, listen up: A string of gas stations in Tennessee has been serially overcharging customers to the tune of thousands. Nikki Johnson bought $22.47 worth of gas and coffee at a Mapco station, but was charged $58,278.35. “They had wiped my bank account out completely and they were in no hurry to get it fixed,” says Johnson. 16 others have been hit with bills as high as $84,522. “That is insane; that is just beyond mind-blowing crazy,” says Johnson, whose boyfriend finally posted the oversized charge on Reddit, giving commenters the opportunity to admit to their own overcharging issues – and sending us rifling through our filing cabinets.
