Iowa city aims to make itself safer by giving assault rifles to cops
1/26/2013The police force in Marion, Iowa, wants its officers to be able to respond to any situation with adequate firepower. To make this happen, the city council has approved the purchase of 25 AR-15s, the type of semi-automatic rifle that Sandy Hook Elementary shooter Adam Lanza used when he killed 20 children and six adults at the school in December. Defending the plan, Police Chief Harry Daugherty said that currently, "The chances of the assailant having more firepower [than responding officers] is greater than vice versa." He said officers armed with AR-15s would put criminals and police on the "same playing field." [Source]
