Six-year-old shot in face by Taliban gets free reconstructive surgery12/23/2012
This spring, 6-year-old Marizeh's family was ambushed by Taliban fighters as they drove through Afghanistan. Her father tried to hide her during the assault, but he and her brother were killed before her eyes, and Marizeh herself was shot in the face by Taliban fighters and left to die. For three hours the little girl held on before help arrived. After recovering from the attack, which cost Marizeh her right eye, she is now in New York, getting $100,000 worth of reconstructive surgery free through a nonprofit organization. Said one operations officer at Oceanside Hospital, "To think about the trauma she's been through and to see her come down and have a smile on her face, it's unbelievable." [Source]
