Reporter detained by Chinese police; reports live while detained

3/15/2013

The Chinese government’s hostility toward members of the press is notorious. Clearly, freedom of the press is an alien idea in China. This attitude was on full (and surreal) display Friday, when Mark Stone, a reporter for Sky News, was detained by Chinese authorities while filming a shot from Tiananmen Square. Stone was in the middle of a segment remembering the 1989 demonstrations held there when he apparently uttered an unidentified word that led to his detention. Somehow, Stone was allowed to broadcast live while he was shuttled in a police van. Oddly, he and his crew were being filmed by Chinese police at the same time. Welcome to China, theater of the absurd meets Big Brother. (Stone later was released.)  [Source]
