4/5/2012Burger King has enlisted the help of several stars for its "Exciting Things are Happening" commercials: Jay Leno, David Beckham, Salma Hayek and Sofia Vergara all appear in spots. But the one featuring R&B star Mary J. Blige is getting flame-broiled by Twitter users mocking her for crooning about crispy chicken and lettuce while BK employees and visitors groove to the beat. Don't forget the cheesy (literally - they feature three cheeses, as Mary warbles) slow-motion close-ups of the ingredients getting wrapped up in a flour tortilla. The company debuted new menu items, such as frappes, smoothies and salads, as it tries to regain the No. 2 spot on the burger chain ranks, which it recently lost to Wendy's.

Burger King has pulled the ad. Blige said the ad was "unfinished" and wasn't what she had agreed to. She said the spot was supposed to feature a "dream sequence." A BK spokesman told Ad Age that the company is re-editing the spot and he apologized to Blige and her fans. Neither BK or Blige addressed criticisms that the ad played into racial stereotypes.
