Don't make any false Valentine vows: Feb. 15 asteroid collision is off
2/2/2013If you feel a sudden breeze accompanied by a deafening "whoosh" sound at some point on Feb. 15, that might be asteroid "2012 DA14" violating Earth's comfort zone. The half-football-field-sized rock will make a record-setting "close approach," missing Earth by an astrologically uncomfortable 17,200 miles — closer than some navigation and communication satellites. However, NASA is confident that 2012 DA14 will not strike. NASA updated a previous fear-mongering report and is now saying that a satellite collision is also unlikely. On the downside, amateur stargazers in the US will miss the spotting opportunity, as the near miss will occur during daytime. [Source]
