Business chooses to shut down rather than serve same-sex couples

12/27/2012

Matt Grubbs believes so strongly that marriage should only be between a man and a woman that he's closing his wedding business. The owner of Discover Annapolis Tours is sacrificing $50,000 in annual revenue he gets from renting his old-fashioned trolleys to couples because he believes Maryland's new law allowing same-sex marriages compromises his religious convictions. A number of wedding vendors nationwide have faced discrimination lawsuits for not accommodating gay couples, and Grubbs is lobbying for an exemption similar to what clergymen receive. But the straight groom who got the first turn-down from Grubbs isn't sold. "You drive a trolley up and down a street," Chris Belkot wrote Grubbs. "Not exactly God's work." [Source]
