Judge dons nun disguise to reach bank-robbery verdict
2/8/2013Do the Hon. Matthew F. Kennelly's actions during a recent bench trial indicate jurisprudential genius or just plain eccentricity? You be the judge: A woman accused of robbing an Illinois bank while wearing an elderly white nun mask said she couldn't have been one of the two robbers because they were white and she's black. However, two tellers testified they'd seen the robbers' black skin through the masks' eye holes. To reach a verdict, Kennelly cloistered himself in his office, put on the nun mask and looked in the mirror. His skin color, he said, was clearly visible through the eye holes. Guilty! Well done, judge. Just make sure this costume thing doesn't become a habit. [Source]
