Mayan temple 'irreparably' damaged by apocalypse-seeking tourists
12/24/2012Ugh, leave it to obnoxious tourists to even ruin the Apocalypse. A Mayan temple in Guatemala managed to survive roughly 1,500 years without incident but was "irreparably" damaged by people partying like it was 1999 (or whenever the last almost End of the World was scheduled). The temple, creatively named Temple II, is located in the archaeological site of Tikal, which was the center of the Mayan civilization. "Sadly, many tourists climbed Temple II and caused damage," Tikal's technical advisor said. "We are fine with the celebration, but (the tourists) should be more aware because this is a (UNESCO) World Heritage Site." Over 7,000 doomsday seekers visited Tikal on Friday. [Source]
