Mazel Tov! Israel expands medical marijuana usage

11/5/2012

In case you were looking for another reason to make a Jewish birthright pilgrimage, Israel is expanding its medical marijuana industry (though keep in mind some of it won't get you high). Because of the county's already booming medical research sector, as well as government cooperation, the number of marijuana users in Israel has gone from a few hundred in 2005 to well over 10,000 today. And unlike in the U.S., where the drug's legality is still hotly contested, everybody in Israel seems pretty chill about weed use, man. "When push comes to shove, and people see how suffering people are benefitting, I’m sure everyone will get behind it," said Yuli Edelstein, Israeli minister of public diplomacy. Next Passover, it looks like Israelis may be passing around a slightly different bitter herb. [Source]
