Break-proof, brightly colored melamine tableware looks great in cabinets — but it might not be good for your health. Scientists have found that when heated, melamine can secrete toxins that might lead to a greater incidence of kidney stones — which means that using one to heat soup in the microwave, for example, could be problematic. Researchers said that the study points out the importance of studying not just the safety of food but the vessels used to serve it as well — and said that melamine owners could avoid potential problems by simply not using it to heat food or for prolonged food storage.
