Mental disorder makes people think they're on reality TV
5/31/2012HBO is getting sued by one Nicholas Marzano, who is accusing the premium cable channel of secretly filming him for a reality show with his entire hometown (including police, physicians, family and friends) as hired extras. Sound crazy? That's because it is: It's an example of a recent psychological disorder, dubbed the "Truman Show" delusion, which has cropped up since 1998 and is growing increasingly common in our current age of reality TV. (One patient with the disorder worked on the staff of an actual reality show.) We'd much prefer that people fall prey to the "Jersey Shore" delusion, a mild disorder we just made up that would lead only to working out, getting tan and doing laundry.
What reality show would you want to be psychologically trapped in?
