The 5-second rule for dropped food is dangerously optimistic

12/2/2012

This enlightening video by Michael Stevens of Vsauce explains in exhaustive detail why the "5-Second Rule" should really be the "Don't Touch Food That's Fallen on the Floor Rule." In five seconds, roughly 150-8,000 bacteria bond to dropped food, wet or dry, and it only takes 10 bacteria of some strains of salmonella to infect you. Also, 93 percent of shoes are contaminated with fecal matter. Yum! Stevens goes on to explain how pretty much everything is coated in bacteria and why this isn't always a bad thing.
