Rugged self-reliance? Eh, not so much. Tax records show thousands of millionaire families claimed millions more in unemployment benefits during a faltering economy. Nearly 3,200 households with adjusted gross incomes of more than $1 million bumped up their earnings with an average of $12,600 in unemployment benefits in 2010 (the latest year for which figures are available). To put those figures in perspective, they got more free money from the government than roughly 25 million families make in a whole year. The country spent $80 million on these benefits to millionaires over the entire recession, and it was all perfectly legal: The benefits have no income limit. Yet another reason it pays to be in the 1 percent. [Source]
