Unwelcoming church members ban black couple's wedding

7/29/2012

In a story that sounds more like something out of the 1960s, a black couple was banned from getting married in a Mississippi church. The pastor at First Baptist Church in Crystal Springs, Stan Weatherford, called the day before to relocate the wedding of Charles and Te’Andrea Wilson. Parishioners at the mostly white church voted no blacks could be married there, and not wanting to start a controversy among his flock or ruin the couple’s big day, Weatherford married them at a different church. Now the newlyweds, who are both regular attendees (but not members) of First Baptist, say they’re looking for answers. "I didn't like it at all, because I wasn't brought up to be racist. I was brought up to love and care for everybody," Te'Andrea Wilson said. [Source]
