Todd Akin legitimately loses Missouri Senate race

Todd Akin has lost his U.S. Senate seat bid in Missouri against vulnerable incumbent Claire McCaskill. The besieged Akin made several ill-considered comments about rape and pregnancy that defied basic principles of biology. He also ignored pleas from his own party to abandon the race when public outcry went supernova. While he inexplicably managed not to be the first candidate in history to break the laws of math and start polling negative numbers, his slow, eventual recovery never got anywhere near a legitimate chance at winning. His loss also means a demoralizing blow to Republican hopes to retake control of the Senate, what with McCaskill's chances looking exceedingly grim before Akin's string of blunders.
