New law lets religious children refuse to study evolution

8/10/2012

Creationists' kids in Missouri will be able to refuse to study evolution in public schools under a "Right to Pray" amendment approved by voters Tuesday. Amendment 2 reiterates the right to pray in schools and also protects students from being "compelled to perform or participate in academic assignments or educational presentations that violate his or her religious beliefs." The implications of this could be far-reaching, with evolution being just one of the areas in which students might claim religious exemption, though state Rep. Mike McGhee, who introduced the measure, says he doesn’t foresee issues with students claiming, “It’s against my religion to do algebra,” for instance. [Source]
