MIT scientists brag they can tell if your smile is real or fake

5/26/2012

Humans smile when they're happy, frustrated, just being polite and even when they're sad, and other humans can usually interpret which smile they're getting. But not always. MIT researchers say their computer does much better. After mapping the face and distinct features of smiles, the program was able to figure out patterns in facial movements that corresponded to each grin which transcended any single snapshot. The computer recognized "frustrated" smiles 90 percent of the time, far outpacing humans. It may not help you next time your soul mate is giving you an icy grin, but that's not MIT's fault.
