Kentucky senators back potentially pot-friendly hemp production bills
2/17/2013Nothing says traditionally conservative Deep South better than hemp, right? We're sure that's why right-leaning Sens. Mitch McConnell and Rand Paul, both from Kentucky, have joined forced with two Oregon politicians on an initiative to legalize U.S. hemp production. The federal bill, which the Kentucky pols introduced after a state Senate initiative passed (pending federal sign-off), has anti-pot folks worried it could be a slippery slope toward recreational pot. Supporters argue that hemp has less THC than marijuana and can't get you high, but it comes from the same cannabis sativa plant species, making it a foe of weed opponents. Still, the endorsement by McConnell and Paul, who point to jobs and economic growth as benefits of the bill, indicates the landscape might be changing. [Source]
