Senator blasts liberal group for 'racial slur' against his Asian wife

3/3/2013

Top Senate Republican Mitch McConnell came out swinging in defense of his wife Saturday, saying she was the  victim of a racist comment from a liberal activist group. Progress Kentucky tweeted about McConnell’s spouse, former U.S. Labor Secretary Elaine Chao, writing: “This woman has the ear of @McConnellPress – she's his #wife. May explain why your job moved to #China!" The group apologized for the tweet, saying the volunteer who posted the comment has been terminated. But McConnell, who called that jab a "racial slur," isn't ready to back down just yet. "They will not get away with attacking my wife in this campaign," the Kentucky lawmaker said at a Republican dinner Saturday. He said Chao has now lived in the U.S. for almost half a century; she immigrated from Taiwan at age eight. [Source]
