NASCAR fan's bucket list journey comes to a sad end at Daytona

2/24/2013

When his cancer returned and doctors gave him less than a week to live, Mitchell Zanette put his go-pedal to the metal. His bucket list? To see as much of the NASCAR circuit as he could, and with his family, a rented motor home and a few weeks worth of pain meds, the 50-year-old Pennsylvania man took off for Daytona. He made it through a few sessions of practice, but not to the green flag for Sunday's Daytona 500; Zanette died Thursday. Now his family is hoping Dale Earnhardt Jr., son of the volunteer firefighter's favorite driver, will enscribe Zanette's name on the hood of No. 88 for the day. "He was a great, fun guy," said Toby Klump, a childhood friend. [Source]
