MLB Twitter page no longer sees the humor in infield fly joke10/6/2012
So routine are most baseball pop-ups that many casual watchers don't know there is such a thing as the infield fly rule. Simply put, it's to prevent fielders from the deceit of intentionally dropping the ball to turn a double play. But there is enough fine print to confuse even long-time fans, which is why Major League Baseball has poked fun at the rule (and itself) on its Twitter profile with the phrase, "We don't understand the infield fly rule, either." Pretty funny — until controversy erupted over a call in the Cardinals-Braves playoff game. Then, suddenly, the joke disappeared. Just like the Braves' World Series hopes. [Source]
Do you understand the rule? Did the umps blow it?
