The early risers are a normal part of your sleep cycle, occurring throughout the night whenever you enter REM sleep. Your body releases neurotransmitters that prevent you from acting out your dreams. One of those neurotransmitters, norepinephrine, controls erections, and when you enter REM, it decreases, allowing increased blood flow. You often wake to your morning glory because we often wake just out of REM, and thus, see the product of a hard night’s sleep.
