Mount Everest reminds world that it's still a death trap

5/21/2012

Mount Everest is the site of another tragedy. Three climbers are dead and two more are missing after a "traffic jam" at the top of the world slowed their descents as a windstorm blew in, a Nepalese mountaineering official said. The horror is reminiscent of May 10, 1996, when eight people died on the mountain, a tragedy that was captured by Jon Krakauer's best-selling book "Into Thin Air." Climbers this time around were reportedly trying to reach the summit as late as 2:30 p.m., nearly four hours past the cutoff time for expeditions into the mountain's "death zone," so while this is sad, it was also potentially avoidable. Some people just can't help themselves, especially on Everest.
