Muslims may be bummed by tiny amounts of booze in soda

6/28/2012

If you thought forgoing bacon was tough, being a devout Muslim just got even more challenging: A new study shows that soft drinks such as Coke and Pepsi contain alcohol. Although the levels appear to be infinitesimal at 10 mg per liter (that's 0.001 percent alcohol), that's still enough to put the fizzy drinks out of bounds for religious folks. The Paris-based National Institute of Consumption analyzed 19 different colas, and while the big brands failed the no-alcohol test, nine cheap supermarket brands did just fine. Although it might not look supercool strutting around with a can of Leader Price cola in hand, followers of Islam might prefer that to water bottles.
