Who's counting? Invocation refers to Obama as 45th president

1/21/2013

The biggest flub of the inauguration ceremonies so far wasn't made by the president or the chief justice, but by the person who delivered the invocation. Myrlie Evers-Williams, the widow of civil rights activist Medgar Evers, proudly announced "the inauguration of our 45th president, Barack Obama." Obama became the 44th president when he was sworn in 2009, and he’s STILL the 44th — his number doesn't tick up just because he won a second term. Now wrap your head around this: Obama is the 44th president but only the 43rd man to hold the job. Grover Cleveland won two nonconsecutive terms and is considered both the 22nd and 24th president. Got it? Good.
