NASA wants lasers to shoot down asteroids that could strike Earth

Did you miss the most surreal and amazing congressional hearing ever to take place? It involved lasers and asteroids and using lasers to shoot asteroids heading towards Earth. This was a real and sober meeting, in which a government agency asked Congress to consider giving it tons of money to build lasers to shoot asteroids. NASA officials told the House committee on space that to deflect humanity-ending asteroids from hitting the planet, lasers (not attached to sharks; much bigger ones) are needed so they could knock civilization-smiting asteroids off course before they got anywhere near Earth.
