Kids sprint to a record with 16,407 recyclable shoes
2/7/2013The courtyard in front of National Geographic's DC headquarters looked like Imelda Marcos' closet this week, but it was for a good cause. National Geographic Kids magazine rallied its readers to help it snag the Guinness World Record for most shoes collected for recycling. The magazine needed 15,000 athletic shoes, which will be donated to Nike Reuse-a-Shoe, to sprint into the record books. It got 16,407 and was deemed "officially amazing" by Guinness representative (and careful counter) Mike Janela. Among the varied mix of sneaks were pairs donated by Taylor Swift, Eli Manning, Danica Patrick and other celebs. But of course, it was the kids who got it across the finish line. [Source]
