Americans live shorter, unhealthier lives than our wealthy neighbors

America is great at many, many things — innovation, football, freedom — but it turns out we're generally worse at living healthy lives than other wealthy nations. New research from the National Research Council has found that American men had the lowest life expectancy among men in 17 other countries. Americans also came in below average in health categories like infant mortality, injuries and homicides, adolescent pregnancy, obesity and heart disease. While the researchers didn't find a direct cause-effect relationship with one facet of American society, they did speculate that Americans' love of individualism and personal autonomy could be contributing factors.
