You'll never believe the annual cost of the 9/11 memorial

9/10/2012

Tomorrow is the 11th anniversary of the Sept. 11 attacks, and the National Sept. 11 Memorial and Museum at the World Trade Center is still under construction. The $700 million site — whose construction is currently on hiatus due to a "funding squabble" — may not be completed until 2014. The biggest issue, though, is the estimated $60 million annual cost to operate and maintain it once complete. No, you read that right. The two massive fountains marking the site of the twin towers make up $5 million of that amount, while private security will add up to $12 million each year. By contrast, that's more than the cost of Arlington National Cemetery, Gettysburg National Military Park and the USS Arizona Memorial at Pearl Harbor combined.
