Please don't sext us to celebrate texting's 20th anniversary

12/3/2012

Text messaging turns 20 today, and we've come a long way from that very first LOL-free text that read "Merry Christmas." British engineer Neil Papworth thought he was just creating a boring, internal office communication system, but instead he gave us the technology to embarrass ourselves, insult each other and make all kinds of awkward mistakes, like sexting wrong numbers, at lightning speed. Papworth, one of the original nerds (back when calling someone nerdy wasn't a compliment) is ultra-cool in our book. After all, he paved the way for a new all-caps language and made it A-OK to never learn how to spell. OMG, we're so thankful. [Source]
