New Orleans Hornets mulling name change to Pelicans

Since moving to the city in 2002, the New Orleans Hornets have been a team stuck with an ill-fitting nickname. But the team could soon have a much more appropriate one. Say hello to the New Orleans Pelicans. While the change isn't official, it appears the new title could take flight in time for the 2013-14 season. Tom Benson has been seeking a moniker with a local connection since he bought the team in April. Benson also owns the rights to the Pelicans nickname (it was the name of a minor league baseball team) and the brown pelican is Louisiana's state bird, so the change makes sense on many levels.
