Library borrower returns book, overdue by 55 years

2/6/2013

A saintly bookworm has returned a 55-years-overdue copy of "The Fire of Francis Xavier" to the New York Public Library along with a check for $100 to cover the fines. Perhaps Seinfeld's missing library book detective, Mr. Bookman, was making the rounds. Or maybe the guilt of harboring an overdue book telling the story of a virtuous Jesuit priest was too much to take. Whatever the reason, the dog-eared book was mailed in a plain brown envelope, complete with antique checkout card stamped April 10,1958, and the generous sum. Library staff won't say who signed the check, only that $100 more than covers any fines. Mr. Bookman, any ideas about the identity of our anonymous book returner? [Source]
