Yankees prove they're the 'evil empire' by refusing to share the name
2/24/2013Sometimes it's just good business to embrace the hate. It's been a decade since a Boston Red Sox executive dubbed the rival New York Yankees "the evil empire," and while the reference was copped from Ronald Reagan (who copped it from "Star Wars"), the Yankees think of it as their own, to the point of playing music from the movie at home games. And now the courts agree. Trademark judges have ruled that the phrase can't be copyrighted by a company named Evil Enterprises Inc., to sell apparel because "there is only one evil empire in baseball and it is the New York Yankees." At least until the Sith get a ballclub together. [Source]
