Artwork showing slave oral sex uncovered at New Jersey library

1/21/2013

Offensive or engaging? We're talking about the huge drawing hanging at the Newark Public Library in New Jersey showing, among other controversial imagery, a female black slave and a white man having oral sex. The large work by artist Kara Walker was covered up last month, after library workers complained it was inappropriate. But after meetings between employees and library officials, the artwork's shroud has been removed. Library trustee and history prof Clement A. Price expressed relief at the institution's decision to show the drawing and allow for debate. "Should we be depicted sentimentally, romantically?" he said. "Should some of the grotesque realities be depicted in art or movies?" Discuss! [Source]
