New comet prepares to wow all of humanity

9/26/2012

A newly discovered comet is expected to blaze past the Earth sometime next year — and it’ll be visible to the naked eye late November 2013. The comet, rather unpoetically named “C/2012 S1 (ISON)” was discovered last week by Russian astronomers, who say that at its brightest, the comet will outshine our lowly moon. While we set the timer on the inevitable comet memes (we’re betting they involve “Night of the Comet” somehow), astronomers are somewhat more excited — with one expert calling it “quite possibly a once-in-a-civilization's-lifetime event.” [Source]
