Newspapers pull not-so-funny 'Doonesbury' strip on abortion

Newspapers across the country are pulling a "Doonesbury" strip that lampoons Texas abortion laws and includes the line "By the authority invested in me by the GOP base, I thee rape." Which, granted, is intense fare for the all-ages audience that turns to the "funnies" to enjoy the adventures of "Funky Winkerbean" and "Marmaduke."

"Doonesbury" has a long-standing history of political commentary, so Pulitzer-prize winning author Gary Trudeau feels his subject matter is entirely appropriate. "This is happening in statehouses across the country. It's lunacy, and lunacy, of course, is in my wheelhouse," he says.
