NFL might give kickoffs the boot in its fight against concussions12/7/2012
With concussions and other injuries on the rise due to violent collisions, the NFL has some doubts about the safety of kickoffs, so it's going to punt. Under a radical rule change the league's competition committee will consider this offseason, games could start with a team having the ball on its own 30-yard line, but stuck in a fourth- and-15 situation with the option of punting or going for the first down. The same scenario would follow all scoring plays. Commissioner Roger Goodell admitted the proposal by Tampa Bay Bucs coach Greg Schiano is "off the wall," which means in the conservative NFL, it has a Hail Mary chance at best. [Source]
