'Ninja rocks' shatter a windshield with the power of science

11/4/2012

You should know something right off the bat: "ninja rocks" have absolutely nothing to do with ninjas. They're simply the broken shards of spark plugs, made from aluminum oxide ceramic. Their stealthy moniker refers to the way the pebbles can shatter tempered glass swiftly and (relatively) silently with just a toss. Because the rocks are harder than tempered glass on the Moh's scale, the sharp edges of the shards are easily able to create tiny scratches in the glass, which quickly propagate through the glass, shattering it almost instantly. While the video and the science behind it may be cool, please don't try this trick at home, especially if you're from California, because it's a misdemeanor to even own "ninja rocks" in that state.
