UN says goal of no new AIDS infections or deaths is achievable by 2015

12/1/2012

On the heels of Secretary of State Hillary Clinton’s plan to achieve an AIDS-free generation, the United Nations is doing her one better, pledging this World AIDS day that will be no new AIDS infections or AIDS-related deaths by 2015 — a 1,000 day goal. UN Secretary General Ban Ki-moon said "Zero new HIV infections, zero discrimination, and zero AIDS-related deaths by 2015 is achievable … let us commit to build on and amplify the encouraging successes of recent years to consign HIV/AIDS to the pages of history." He's referring to the dramatic decline in AIDS infections and deaths in the last decade: The number of newly infected individuals went from 3.2 million in 2001 to 2.5 million in 2011. [Source]
