North Korea conducted a nuclear test today, says UN official

2/12/2013

The "unusual seismic event" in North Korea on Tuesday that was detected by several earthquake monitoring stations was caused by a nuclear test, according to a U.N. Security Council diplomat. South Korea says the earthquake was near the site of two previous atomic tests in North Korea. North Korea has not confirmed whether it was a nuclear test. A South Korean Defense Ministry spokesperson said that North Korea had informed China and the U.S. of its test plans, which have been widely anticipated. A magnitude 3.9 earthquake and a magnitude 4.5 earthquake were detected when North Korea carried out nuclear tests in 2006 and 2009. [Source]
