'Stupidest idiot' eBayer sells safe with $26K inside

[MOST SHARED] A look back at our first week.

Our post on an eBay seller who sold a locked floor safe for $122.93 that unbeknownst to him had $26,000 in cash inside attracted more than 3,000 shares. We assume that you really didn't want your friends to repeat this man's mistake.

Longtime eBay seller James Labrecque starts each of his listings with the same warning: "WHAT YOU SEE IS WHAT YOU GET. NOTHING MORE AND NOTHING LESS." He's half right. Labrecque sold a locked floor safe on the auction site for $122.93, but the buyer found $26,000 cash inside. "I thought it was empty [...] So I put it on eBay" Labrecque told WMC-TV. "I feel like the stupidest idiot in the world." He has reached out to the Tennessee-based buyer, asking for half of the money. The buyer declined, quoting Labrecque's own caveat back to him. Hey, at least you got positive feedback!

Would you split the cash with him?

Easy answer: I'd give the money back to person it belonged to. That would not be James L.

No way, but I also would not have told anyone what was in the safe either...I'm sure the Taxman is interested in this "found" money as well...Also..who forgets 26 grand in their safe?

I'd return it.

Not because of the fifteen minutes of fame I'd get or because I'm some relic from a Frank Capra fim or even because I'd feel guilty spending it. I'd return because it's the right thing to do.

Who the **** forgets about $26,000?  If this guy needs half back, how did he not know 26k had gone missing in his life, really?  Something doesn't add up at all.
