Atheists band together to help 'evil' teen

21 Feb 2012 06:07:21 GMT

Sixteen-year-old Jessica Ahlquist successfully sued her high school last month to have a prayer banner taken down, a move that may have made her the most hated teenager in Rhode Island. Ahlquist has been flooded with threats (a state representative went as far as to call her an "evil little thing") -- and money since. Ahlquist's supporters have given her $42,000 in scholarship money. Hemant Mehta, who runs the Friendly Atheist blog, led the fundraising efforts. "So many atheists around the country are amazed by what she did. It's not easy to take a stand on a decision that's so unpopular," Mehta said.

Do you agree with the court's decision?

I disagree with the court's judgement because there is freedom of religion, they don't have to pull it down. If she or any other atheists have something to say to the world, they can put up their own banner too.

Here's the prayer:

Our Heavenly Father,

Grant us each day the desire to do our best,
To grow mentally and morally as well as physically,
To be kind and helpful to our classmates and teachers,
To be honest with ourselves as well as with others,
Help us to be good sports and smile when we lose as well as when we win,
Teach us the value of true friendship,
Help us always to conduct ourselves so as to bring credit to Cranston High School West.

Amen

Hmmm..

It's a nice sentiment.  Why not just take out 'Our Heavenly Father' & 'Amen'?

Why doesn't it tell what the banner said?

Hey Sheila, how about you go outside and pray on your own time instead of during time for learning.  Freedom of religion also means freedom FROM religion.  What you do at home and on your own time is your choice, but public schools and government institutions is not the place for religion.  Plus, if you want your prayers said in school will you also allow muslim prayers?  Hindu?  Buddhist?  Wiccan?  This country is a free country, and it states in the constitution that "Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof" and this includes ALL RELIGION, not just Christianity.  So if you want your prayers said in public schools then all the children should have all the prayers, and even a moment of silence for those who do not follow any religion at all.

To "Someone":  It was a public school, the school put up the prayer banner in 1963.  It was a gift to the school from the first graduating class but was put up by the school.  30 seconds of research could tell you all you needed to know about this.  The fact of the matter is the school was in the wrong for having this banner up because it is a public school.  Just because no one complained before now doesn't mean it wasn't wrong.  Slavery lasted for how long in this country before it was abolished?  Maybe everyone assumed it was a public school because they all actually looked up the facts and already knew it was a public school.  Please do a little research yourself before you make your own assumptions.

WOW, I love how all of you asume that it was a public school..... realy, it could be private, so stop assumming.

Also, how do you know that this prayer banner wasn't put up by some students. A prayer banner is used to bless a person who is generaly sick or is facing hard times. Ever heard the phrase "My prayers go out to you and your family"? That is what a prayer banner is.

Hey Sheila,
Speaking of knowing English to live here, you keep using the wrong word on your compound sentences!!! You keep using the word AN, when you mean AND, get it right or as you say go back to your home country. Also we have freedom of Religion here so anyone of any belief are allowed to come here and practice as they see fit.

I agree with the judges decision 100% and I am VERY proud of this girl for being brave enough to stand up for something she believes in and followed through with it. She shows true leadership and I think she will do amazing things as she gets older and we need more people like this in the world. She is not evil in any way. I believe prayer and religion is a personal matter and it should not be forced on to anyone especially in schools. If a child wants to pray in school say at lunch time that is fine but forcing it upon others in any way is wrong. Just like religion is being thrown in to politics way too much these days and it is supposed to be separate and it is not. To me following a certain religion is a personal matter and can be shared among others of the same religion in a church. I would be very angry if a school that was not established on religion and was a public school was teaching my child religion. I am a spiritual person and I am not in anyway religious and if my son chooses to be religious that is his own personal choice to choose on his own outside of school.

I agree with the Judges decision. Public schools should not have prayer banners up for display. She/he was right to rule in Jessica's favor.

We teach the ancient Greek, Roman and Egyptian gods because they cannot be separated from the culture, mores, attitudes and actions of the time. However, the United States has always had a culture of separation of Church and State. Our Constitution accepts all persons - belivers and non-belivers. We are all supposed to have the same rights under the law. Is that going away because of the rise of the religious right. We must not let ourselves be forced to accept what these white, lower middle class men want to force down our throats. We cannot let them control our lives!!!! .

I support you, Jessica.
