Ikea (finally) admits its instructions are confusing

22 Feb 2012 03:54:58 GMT

Ikea, the Swedish purveyors of modernist DIY home furnishings and 50-cent hot dogs, has heard your pleas: They understand their much-parodied, wordless assembly instructions make things more complicated than they need to be. Thus, they have begun posting how-to videos on their YouTube channel. The first in the series is a four-minute clip on assembling the Malm bed frame. There are helpful pop-up windows, and viewers can pause, rewind and fast forward easily. New videos are planned weekly, with upcoming spots for the Pax Lyngdal wardrobe and Galant corner desk. No word on whether videos are planned for making Swedish meatballs.

Is assembling stuff from Ikea really that hard?

If you can understand what's wrong with your European car when a warning light comes on, you can put together IKEA furniture.

It is easy - for women to do. Why? Because women is following the instruction carefully and exactly, because women do not think they can do it. It might take a little longer, but it gets done correctly.

Men, on the other hand, are "sure" they can do it without the instructions, and they get a few nails, screws or a piece of wood left over, saying "we don't need this, they send some extras"

After a few days the construction falls apart.

I enjoy assembling IKEA products.  However, there is always something wrong with the instructions.  A screw hole in the wrong place in the pic, something like that.

I am a very visual person, so I actually PREFER pictures to a bunch of words - especially considering the poor wording (or translation) of most written instructions.

Yes, they really are that difficult!  I purchased 6 Stephan dining chairs and we finally tossed the instructions aside and figured them out on our own.  Hours later we completed 4 chairs but were so mentally stressed, we didn't put the others together until Thanksgiving eve, the night before we needed them.  The price was fantastic albeit the quality is low but we took the frustration in stride.

I purchased a kitchen with 28 cabinets. One would expect that all the pieces for each cabinet are bundled together, right? Wrong! You must find and gather together all the pieces for each cabinet, and every single item is sold separately. I had over 500 boxes to sort into 28 future cabinets. Some items were missing, others were damaged, and there is no way to quickly ship items. We made 3 trips back to the store, 100 miles away, to exchange damaged items or buy parts that were not included. The labor to assemble them cost 3-4 times the price of the cabinets. After all that the finish was so thin it peeled on some of the fronts. On the plus side, the glides and self close drawers are fabulous. Would I buy from them again? Not in a million years!
