NRA calls for armed guards in US schools, database of mentally ill

12/21/2012

National Rifle Association head Wayne LaPierre said today that what's needed to protect U.S. schoolchildren is "a plan of absolute protection," including guns in schools. "The only thing that stops a bad guy with a gun is a good guy with a gun," LaPierre said. He was speaking at the organization's first news conference since the shooting one week ago at a Connecticut primary school that killed 20 young children and six adults. Beyond armed protection at schools, LaPierre also called for a federal database of mentally ill citizens ("They walk among us every single day") and shifted the blame for the attack from guns onto the media ("Too many in our national media … act as silent enablers, if not implicit co-conspirators") and violent video games such as "Mortal Kombat" and "Kindergarten Killers." [Source]
