NY Marathon runners start new race to deliver aid to Sandy victims
11/4/2012Marathon runners are equipped with tons of stamina and lungs of steel — and some have huge hearts to match. After the New York Marathon was canceled from Hurricane Sandy, sports medicine doctor Jordan Metzl gathered about 500 displaced runners to run together this morning. The gang convened on Staten Island, wearing orange and ready to jog a relief route to deliver supplies like batteries, medicine and clothes to Sandy survivors. Unlike the thousands of runners in Central Park who essentially did the canceled race anyway, Metzl's event was fueled by altruism. The 15-mile relief route was a shorter distance than the marathon's 26.2 miles, but higher on strength demand (the 15-pound packs made it more challenging, Metzel said). [Source]
