RIP, Nyan Cat — meme's real life inspiration has gone to kitty heaven
11/3/2012Nyan Cat, the year-old rainbow-cat meme we all know and love (you know, the cat with a Pop-Tart torso and rainbows coming out of its rear, that scrolls forever) was originally inspired by creator Chris Torres’ lovable gray kitty, Marty. Sadly, the nearly 3-year-old Marty passed away in Torres’ arms after being diagnosed, just a week ago, with feline infectious peritonitis — a fatal and incurable kitty disease. Torres posted a commemorative pic on Twitter and said, “Marty heavily influenced a lot of my comics and the creation of Nyan Cat.” It’s the end of an era, but Marty’s legacy will live on in that bouncy little meme.
