NYC's 911 operators get millions of butt dials each year

5/11/2012

A whopping 38 percent of calls made to New York City's 911 operators are thought to be made by accident. In other words, 4 million people called 911 without meaning to. The main culprit: People who sit on cell phones they've stashed in their back pockets. The phenomenon is known as a "butt dial" -- or, if prefer the less crude term, a "pocket dial" -- and it's tying up phone lines that officials say should be kept free for actual emergencies. One report on the problem concluded that it could be fixed with a public awareness campaign, presumably one that orders NYC butt-dialers to be less cheeky and keep their phones locked when they're not being used.
