Obama uses story of Instagram to defend immigration policy
1/29/2013During his speech on immigration reform in Las Vegas on Tuesday, President Obama threw out a term that was sure to get the attention of today's disillusioned youth: Instagram. In making his case for reform, Obama noted that Instagram, the massively popular photo-sharing program that was recently acquired by Facebook, was started by an immigrant who studied in the U.S. and then remained in the U.S. He was speaking of Michel Krieger, a Brazilian-born software engineer who studied at Stanford. It was there that he met Kevin Systrom, and the two co-founded Instagram in 2010. Obama's plan has four major components: 1) Strengthen border security; 2) Crack down on employers hiring undocumented workers; 3) Provide a path to citizenship for the 11 million undocumented workers currently living in the U.S.; 4) Streamline the legal immigration system.
