Obama stops 'evolving,' comes out for gay marriage
5/9/2012President Obama made a bold move today in an interview with ABC's Robin Roberts, announcing his support of gay marriage and ending persistent questions about his position on the hotly debated issue. Obama previously had said his beliefs were "evolving," but today he said firmly, "At a certain point I've concluded that for me personally, it is important for me to go ahead and affirm that I think same-sex couples should be able to get married." This makes Obama the first sitting president to support gay marriage -- and in an election year, no less. No matter how it plays out in November, this much is certain: it's a stunning development.
Will Obama's declaration help or hurt him in the upcoming election?
